LinkedIn was described to me as “networking on steroids.” And networking with LinkedIn means “focusing on the professional side of connecting and communicating”.

Whereas Facebook and Twitter can be more “friend-oriented”, LinkedIn offers you the opportunity to highlight the professional side of your brand.

LinkedIn gives people the chance to meet new people who can elevate their careers and take them to new levels. The site carries a membership group of about 70 million people with an average annual income of $109,000.

Networking with LinkedIn

The first thing I did was creating my LinkedIn profile. Here are the steps I took to have my profile finished quickly:

  • I filled out my employment history. Going all the way to 1999. This will give my network the background the need as it related to where I have been and what I have done.
  • I had a professional headshot made. This is the same headshot I use on all my networks – that way people can recognize me outside of LinkedIn.
  • I let people in on my education background. Where I went to high school and college.
  • I wrote a short summary of what my professional life has been. I took the 100-word bio I learned to write from the book “Branding Yourself” and turned into my LinkedIn Career Summary.

That was pretty much it – I had my LinkedIn profile up within 60 minutes. But the work doesn’t end there.

After I created my profile, I started building my network of contacts and connections.

From Contact to Connection

It is important to mention that making connections is far more important than collecting contacts. Because contacts just have your information as a reference point. While connections truly care about you and what you want to achieve.

Here are some quick tips to start turning contacts into connections:

  1. Build trust by offering valuable information to your contacts.
  2. Recommend others – turning your LinkedIn profile into a referral machine.
  3. Join the conversation in groups that share your interests.
  4. Keep in touch with the white-collar professional by finding common ground.
  5. Keep your profile current and don’t lie on it.

Without a doubt, LinkedIn opens huge doors for anyone looking to succeed in life. If used right, this networking site can turn anyone’s career around over time.
