The term “Personal Branding” has been thrown around the Internet marketing world a lot for the past five to ten years. Yet, many people (in this case, we’ll focus on entrepreneurs) understand the value behind a powerful brand, and how to build one. And to be honest, I was one of those guys.

Personal branding is a process that takes a lot of effort. It’s a 24/7 task, as everything you say and do can be related to your brand. It’s also a process that requires a lot of patience – your brand will be the one thing that will set you apart from everyone else in your field.

Believe me, when I tell you: if you’re an entrepreneur, personal branding could be the best marketing campaign you can run for your business.

Personal Branding: Becoming One with Your Business

Entrepreneurs can use their brands to build the brand for their businesses. This is an opportunity that (for some unknown reason), small business owners seem to pass out.

Some business owners want to stay in anonymity, instead of letting people know who offers the products and services they buy. And unless you’re a mobster or conducting some illegal activity, I do not understand that move at all.

Business success has always been about developing trust with your customer. And today, with all the information and tech advancements surrounding us, becoming trustworthy entities is more important than ever.

That’s why it’s so important that you fuse your brand with your business – it gives your line of consumers someone they can see and trust. They can say “I can trust that guy”, which will make it easier for them to believe “I can trust this product/service/business”.

Be Helpful and Do It Often

There are a gazillion personal brand strategies out there that can help you build a strong brand for yourself and (sub sequentially) your business. But my belief is – without a strong philosophy behind those strategies, you’ll be building a weak brand.

That’s why I believe your first step into building a strong personal brand is to develop a professional philosophy for yourself. If nothing “philosophical” comes to mind, allow me to offer some help.

I adopted the philosophy of “be helpful, do it often” from Chris Brogan. I heard him use that phrase during an interview with Robert Bruce for a Copyblogger podcast. And since then, I’ve taken that tip to heart.

What “be helpful, do it often” has done for me – it has given my brand a purpose. (Almost) everything that I post goes out because it can somehow help someone improve a certain aspect of their business. That’s what the Juan Israel Ortiz brand is all about.

Now here are a couple of questions for discussion.
